Summertime Safety Tips for Pets

Posted May 6th, 2010 by admin

Summertime will be here quickly so let’s brush up with a few tips to beat those hazy, lazy, dog days of summer!

Cooling it down – Don’t ever leave pets unattended in cars because they could suffer from heatstroke. If Fido is excessively panting…then he is uncomfortable! Always provide plenty of water to quench your pets thirst. If you find your pet getting overheated, remove from hot area immediately and sponge the face with cool water. Clear its mouth from saliva to ease breathing. If possible, wrap the body with a wet, but not ice-cold towel. Keep towel cool by pouring water over it at times. Licking on ice cubes will help give small amounts of water. And who says that your pet can’t get sunburn? They very well can, so apply a natural sunscreen to less hairy areas, hairless and light colored pets. And watch for pads of feet too. They are very sensitive and can burn easily also. If it is too hot for you to walk on…then it is too hot for them!

Bug off! – Check for fleas and ticks, as they will become more of a nuisance to all of us during the hotter months! Look for the black specks known as “flea dirt.” Keep ticks at bay with thorough checks and an appropriate insecticidal shampoo. Remove a tick with tweezers at the base of the skin.

Pool time Always supervise your furry friend near a pool or any body of water. If you are taking your pet near a lake or on the sea, use a life jacket for them. If they accidentally fall in, this will help them stay buoyant. They can be excellent swimmers, but dogs can drown from exhaustion if swimming long distances.

On the road again! – If you decided on taking Fido or Fluffy for a road trip, getting them used to short trips prior would be helpful. Avoid feeding before your journey, take a water container to quench their thirst, covering the seats and floors with towels or newspaper (for those who are car sick) and stop frequently for exercise…and of course to relieve itself!

If you become overwhelmed with even the idea of traveling with your four footed friend, you can make arrangements in advance for in-home pet care. It might be less stressful for all! They also may be more content to be in their own home!
