The perfect dog for the non-dog person

Posted May 15th, 2010 by admin

I want to start this article by saying I was NEVER a dog person at all! I didn’t like them, they stink they shed and they are too big and scary. I found out several years ago that my neighbors were getting a dog. “Oh great” was my first thought. I had to be neighborly and go meet the pouch but I was just being nice. I had no intention of sticking around to play fetch! To my surprise he was cute and nice and tolerable…he grew on me and pretty soon I wanted to know more about him. I fell in love with their dog and not long after that I was begging for my own! What kind of dog could soften the heart of someone who never even wanted to be around dogs much less have her own?

Meet the mini Schnauzer. The breed developed in the late 19th century in Germany . It is a cross between the standard Schnauzer (kind of big) and smaller dog like the Poodle or Affenpinsher. It is in the Terrier family of dogs.It is one of the most popular breeds in the world and as recently as 2008 top 11th in the U.S. . It is the breeds size and temperament that allows it to claim this spot in popularity.

The mini Schnauzers temperament (as stated by official Standards) is “alert and obedient”  ” easy to command” and “friendly , intelligent and willing to please”. They are not timid or overaggressive. They make excellent watch dogs. They are fiercely loyal to their owners and very territorial. They will alarm you to an intruder by bark and growl but not so much with an attack.Once you have been deemed ok by their owner, mini schnauzers are very friendly. They are very playful and interact great with children.( with any dog you should ALWAYS take proper steps to make sure both dog and baby are ok with each other- do not leave unattended until absolutely sure of the situation!) They will hunt or root for small prey like rats and snakes. They grow to 12-20lbs and 12-14 inches tall. They live 12 to 15 years and generally don’t show age until the very end. They are usually salt and pepper or all black or silver and black. You can find white mini’s but because of the breeding tricks it takes to make them solid white and health issue’s that surface in the white ones, they are not recognized as official full breed mini schnauzers. Schnauzers can have cropped or uncropped ears depending on the breeder and your personal stand. I like my dogs ears floppy, but that just my opinion. They will need to be groomed once a month or so. They have hair (not fur) and it will grow and matte. A good brush will do the job. It is recommended to give them an all over cut twice a year however I have mine done 4 times a year. They are considered hypoallergenic because they don’t shed much at all and that means not much doggie dander!

Now, back to my dog. Does he stand up to the description laid out? Absolutely!  My mini is so friendly to everyone. He is with out a doubt the best alarm system for my house. He is awesome with my kids…even lets them put hair barrettes and play dress up with him! I have never pulled a dog hair from my clothes. He is lovable and cuddly, the perfect lap dog. Even my non animal husband loves him, though I am not sure he would admit it in public! He has become part of our family!  I might still be a non-dog person but I will always be a mini schnauzer mom!

Can I guarantee you that a mini will be perfect for your family? No ,but I can guarantee that if you don’t like dogs and your kids have been begging you for ever, mini schnauzers are the perfect place to start! Sit and play with one…he might just melt your non -doggie heart!

Hi! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this site? I’m getting sick and tired of WordPress because I’ve had issues with hackers and I’m looking at options for another platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
